It’s incredible to think that these high school sweethearts have already been through so much together; I have no doubt that they’ll be able to weather the storms of life and enjoy the special moments together in all the years to come!

Brooke + Jerard envisioned a modern, chic, and classic day for their wedding. They’re both very stylish and wanted a wedding that represented their personalities as well as their personal style. There were several large visual statements throughout the day, but the largest statement was the love they exchanged during the ceremony.

Brooke also incorporated several family heirlooms including her amethyst and diamond brooch, her grandmother’s pendant (which was transformed into her engagement ring) and her great great grandmother’s pearl rosary.

Etsy was Brooke’s “go-to” spot for unique details including her programs, favors, and signs. This was my first wedding photographed at Nottoway and I was overwhelmed with the beauty of their wedding. Everything was absolutely perfect and I feel honored to have been asked to photograph their wedding.

Also, I also couldn’t have asked for a better photographer to shoot with, so once again…thanks to Amelia for doing such an awesome job as my 2nd. She’s always there to capture a unique perspective that helps to fill the couple’s wedding gallery with memorable moments.

This woman is my good friend Sophie of Joli Petale. Sophie has created a vision for her business that I  know my clients would love so I had to share for this month’s Featured Vendor Spot!

Joli Petale is an accessories business focused around the bride and her bridesmaids. Everything from earrings and necklaces, to belts and clutches can be found on her site.

I interviewed Sophie for this month’s vendor spot:

How do we know each other? :) 
I met Catherine through mutual friends. Thankfully I have wonderful friends!

What makes what you do different?
I absolutely love what I do. I love to be a part of such a wonderful day in a woman’s life. I am passionate for love and all things pretty. I am fully confident in knowing that this is where God has me and for Him I will work as hard as I can for each and every bride.

What is one tip you have for the couple to help them on their wedding day?
I love what I do but at the end of it all, it’s about the love that couple has for each other. I would advise them to fully embrace that and not get caught up in the little things. In the moments that seem overwhelming take a deep breath and give each other a big hug!

What do you enjoy most about being in the wedding industry?
This is easy… I love the people. I have made so many wonderful friends through this industry and it’s amazing to see everyone so supportive of one another. It’s a beautiful thing when everyone can work together.

What is your favorite thing about owning/running your business?
I love being able to let my creative side run wild. Joli Petale is who I am . It teaches me and molds me into a better person and business woman everyday.

What is your proudest moment and what hopes do you have for your future?
My proudest moment was when I was in town and the sweetest girl came up to me and asked if I was Joli Petale. It was the moment I realized, “Wow, my work is really catching on!”

I don’t want to put myself or my work in a box but everyday I pray for wisdom and new opportunities. But I would absolutely love for Joli Petale to be my full time job one day.

Dad, you’ve never missed out on what’s important and I cannot thank you enough for being such an incredible role model for all of us. You make it difficult to find someone to spend my life with…only because you’ve set the bar so high!

Over the years, Brett + Jolie grew, and in 2008 Jolie left for Italy. They attempted to stay in touch while she was there…but it was difficult. I suppose the absence of each other made their hearts grow fonder because it was then that they knew they were meant to be.

Brett and Jolie realized that they didn’t want to go through life without one another.  They are SO obviously best friends in love and I can only imagine the fun and adventure that they have to come!

They envisioned their day as a beautiful, simple…and classic wedding. Their color palette was seaglass, ivory, and peach … perfect for the start of summer. They made sure to incorporate their love for LSU and vintage details because they really wanted a wedding that reflected who they are.

Photographing Brett + Jolie’s wedding was very special to me. I grew up with Brett so being there for their wedding was incredible!

Brett + Jolie, I cannot thank you guys enough for having me there to document your wedding day. Seeing you surrounded by those you love the most, celebrating your marriage was a beautiful thing! I truly, TRULY wish you the best! I hope you enjoy your wedding day post!

When I first met Haylei, I was struck by her professionalism and witty sense of humor. And as I got to know her, I became a fan of her generous nature, positive attitude, and strong ambition. For someone in her early twenties, this girl has got.it.together!

Haylei has become more of a friend than an intern in these past few weeks and yesterday when our last “intern” lunch ended, I was left with a bit of sadness that the internship was over. I have no doubt that we will continue our friendship…and I cannot wait to see all that Haylei accomplishes in her professional life.

Because I feel like I have learned so much about working with others and “teaching” so to speak in the past few months, I thought it would be nice for Haylei to blog a bit about the internship from her perspective! So…here are her responses:

This is a little about Haylei…from Haylei: 

“I have always been an artist. For as long as I can remember, all I ever wanted to do was color, paint, play and write music, and simply create. Ask my mother and she will tell you that the only thing that could dissuade me from crying was a large pack of gel pens. I was an odd child. Facing decisions of the future, I never had a clear direction, but still somehow knew that I wanted to have a career where I put some creativity to use. So I started college studying graphic design. But when I discovered my passion for photography, I switch colleges and began studying at the Art Institute. It was a perfect match.

Why did you want to do this intership?

During my studies, I would do random photo gigs here and there, getting a feel for what I would consider a lifetime career. Then it happened. My drive, creativity, gone.  Kinda like when you are grilling the most perfect steak and you can’t hardly sink your teeth into it. You let it cook a few minutes too long, turn your back to prepare your side dishes and WAM. All the perfect juices evaporate into the abyss, leaving you will a big piece of beef jerky.  My brain was this steak, and about halfway through my degree, it was like all my creativity was sucked out, never to return again. But, I kept going. My dad would KILL me if I was to stop mid way and become a quitter.

How did you decide that you wanted to intern with me?

So the quarter before I was to graduate, I started looking for internships as a requirement to complete my bachelors degree in photography. I knew I would be moving to Lafayette, so I started looking there.  I contacted a few photographers and reached out to Catherine.

She was quick to respond to my request, and was open to the idea. My first impression of Catherine was that she was spunky, driven and very modest. Even though I knew that she had a reputation as a great photographer, she did not have her nose in the air to me. During our interview she asked what I wanted to gain from the internship apart from school credit. For me, it was getting some of that creativity and inspiration back and I really feel that she took that to heart and made that her 11 week goal.

This is the 8th week I have worked with Catherine. I can honestly say that from day one I have felt a connection with her. She took me under her wing and made me feel as if I was her little sister.

What did you like most about the internship?

Early into the internship, we would ride to shoots together and discuss all my photography problems. I’m not sure she knew she was signing on as my shrink as well. She kept a good attitude about it, and taught me things that I have already begun to apply. Not many people get to see the side of Catherine that I have. At work she is focused, organized and a top level professional. She is a real go getter. But away from the uniform she is warm and easy going. There is never a dull moment.  I always enjoy the breakfasts before our wedding shoots when Catherine, Amelia and I fuel up for the day. Amelia is probably one of the funniest people that I have met. So, we tend to get a good amount of laughs in before things get serious.

Is there a “funniest moment” that you can remember?

The funniest moment in my internship career can be pinned down to the first session I assisted Catherine with. This may be one of those “had to have been there” moments, but if you could have seen the look on her face you would understand. Since it was the first day, my duties were minimal. I was observing and fixing the brides dress every now and then. When we were walking back to the car, she says to me ” Haylei, you are doing such a good job.” I jokingly responded ” Well Catherine, it took a lot to get me to this level of skill.” She looked at me and gave a nervous giggle, which cued me to let her know it was a joke. It was probably too soon for jokes since we weren’t yet comfortable with each other’s humor. Luckily I haven’t had to tell her when I am joking again, but we always get a kick of that moment.

What has surprised you the most about working with a professional photographer….and more specifically, working with me?

One thing about Catherine that most people probably don’t know is that her dog is the complete opposite of her. His name is Chaos and he is the fattest Chihuahua I have laid eyes on. His hobbies and interest include sleeping, going outside, eating and chewing blankets. Nothing at all like Catherine. The only down side is that he is a bit snobby, as Chihuahuas tend to be. But give him a couple snacks and he will warm up to you fast.

What surprised me the most about seeing a wedding photographer behind the scenes in action was how consuming this career is. I knew it was tough, but this sheds a whole new light on things. She shoots a weddings in addition to engagements and bridal sessions every week. On top of that she edits, blogs, and maintains client relations all the while having a personal life on the side. I don’t know how she stays sane, or pretty for that matter!!! Sometimes I get tired just watching her.

What does your future look like from here? 

In three more weeks my internship will be over, I will be finshed with and on to new things. I am expecting the heavens to open and a bright light to shine down upon me as angels sing the hallelujah chorus when I walk across the stage for my diploma. Seriously, I thought this day would never come. I have hoped and dreamed for it to be over, but honestly, since I started this internship I can say I don’t want it to end. I’m not sure where my career will take me from here, but I do know that I wouldn’t trade this time for anything else. I have learned so much in such a little time. Getting to know Catherine, Amilia, Chaos, Brad, and all the wonderful clients we worked with has been great additions to the experience. Catherine has given me insight to her business and, with trust, taught me things to apply to my own. I have a very high opinion of Catherine and appreciate her taking me on as an intern. In years to come when she is a world famous travel wedding photographer, I’ll be glad to boast about all the things I learned from her.

My friend Kaylynn and I met about 5 years ago…at a “flash” Party. And by flash party, I mean…like the nerdy kind. We all brought our camera flashes and experimented with shooting and off camera lighting. Kaylynn was the host, and we’ve been friends since. It seems that we’re always on the same page, pick up where we left off, and I’m so thankful to have her in my life.

I recently met Greer and Jacqueline at this year’s WPPI convention. We attended the Lazers and Blazers party and bonded over the fact that we all were equally more interested in sleeping than partying that night. I laughed a lot with these lovely ladies and was looking forward to our next hangout….

…which happened recently in NOLA. Both Greer and I have taken a strong interest in film photography so we thought it’d be fun to meetup and talk shop. While in NOLA, we walked the streets of the French Quarter shooting! Greer was even kind enough to gift me with a roll of Ilford xp2 120 super film, which I completely fell in love with!

I absolutely love New Orleans, and am always dreaming of the next time I’ll return.

I’ve noticed lately that as I’m getting a little older, my free time is becoming limited. And so is the freetime of those that I love the most. So, this year…I planned to chill on my birthday. I didn’t make any plans because I know how busy everyone is at this point in our lives.

So, you can IMAGINE how surprised I was when I pulled up to my friend Annika’s house for what I anticipated was a BBQ with just she and her husband, Shane. Annika had invited several of the girls I graduated architecture school with as well as Amelia and everyone’s significant others over for burgers.

Of course…I cried, becuase well, I’m me. LOL And I was overwhelmed with joy. I am so thankful that my friends took time out of their busy schedules to celebrate with me for my birthday. There was star-shaped fruit, cupcakes, and a special cake made by my good friend Katie of Katie Bakes. Kelly even brought a bottle of some “Get Educated” for me. I already feel smarter; thanks Kelly. ;)

We spent the night outside on Annika’s porch and I couldn’t be more thankful for this day. I have been bringing my contax 645 film camera with me to document personal moments, big and small…and I was SO happy that I brought it along for this occasion.

My only regret is being SO excited that I didn’t photograph the whole bit of them waving to me at the edge of the porch when I rolled up. I’ll never forget that memory.

Hanna + Jarrad wanted a winter-themed, romantic wedding and did everything right to execute their vision. Also inspired by their wedding was Sarah Kohler of A Paper Proposal! And as a result, Sarah accepted their engagement session for publication!

The night they met, they had a wonderful time. And they continued to have a wonderful time together date after date, until months later they really began to know one another. They were both at a point in their lives where a relationship meant finding that special person to spend forever with.

But they didn’t have to look. Because Lindsay + Monique trust in God and believe that he is the reason they are now beginning forever as husband and wife.

Monique + Lindsay’s wedding was intimate, spiritual, and Southern. It embodied all they are, and incorporated those they love most. The color palette of champagne, green, and pink was absolutely perfect for their day…and the details were executed beautifully!

Monique + Lindsay have a way of allowing those around them into their lives. They’re so positive, loving, and at the end of the night…I was even wiping tears from my eyes.

It’s been such a blessing to have gotten the chance to photograph these two. But I couldn’t have done it alone. This wedding, not only was Amelia there second shooting, but Haylei was there as well! And I’m SO thankful for these ladies!!!

Monique + Lindsay are the perfect reminder of true love and I’m thankful we were chosen to document their day.

So many lovely memories.

Having a second perspective on the wedding day is so valuable. While I was downstairs getting Lindsay ready for the first look, this memory was made, and captured.

Monique + Lindsay opted to do a First Look! I LOVE first looks not only for their reactions, but for the intimacy of the moment and the ability to take photos of the couple before the ceremony!

Monique + Lindsay got a little creative with the moment…and chose to write each other notes and read them aloud during the First Look.

After seeing each other for the first time on their wedding day, we spent some time shooting around the venue.

These photos of Monique + Lindsay’s parents on their wedding day was important for them to have captured.

…..SO many incredible details!

Living here in South Louisiana, we know the true meaning of HEAT! I thought it was super cool that Lindsay and his groomsmen wore these summer suits including Lindsay’s super spiffy seersucker attire.

The ceremony was held at St. Cecilia’s chapel near the Victorian.

The space was very intimate and the perfect size for the number of guests in attendance.

Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Longman!

The reception was held at The Victorian. And the newlyweds opted for a sit-down dinner styled celebration.

Their first dance as husband and wife.

The food…..WOW!!!

The toasts were beautiful, heartfelt, and left many in tears.

I’m so happy for Monique + Lindsay! And thankful to call them friends. Thank you for allowing me to document and share your wedding day. I wish you two lifetime of happiness together!!!
