I have known Kayla for six and have watched her grow into an incredible film shooter. Kayla has been featured in multiple big name publications and even teaches her own workshops in France! Kayla’s interest in photography all began in high school when she was always the girl with the camera at every event. Today, she shares with us about her journey from then to now!
WHAT YOU WILL HEAR IN THIS PODCAST:
- Reasons for switching to film photography?
- How to recover from mistakes with film?
- What are some tips for Social Media?
- Why teach workshops?
Why does Kayla shoot in film?
Of course, shooting film can be a risk, but for Kayla it was all about practice. She taught herself by watching YouTube videos and then tested it out at a few weddings. When she first started with film, she shot every image twice, and slowly became more and more comfortable. Switching to film was just the inspiration she needed at the time. Even with all the different risks of something going wrong with the film, Kayla feel that it is so worth it… especially once you see the beautiful photos.
How to recover from mistakes when shooting film?
Mistakes are impossible to avoid, something can always go wrong! But when mistakes do happen, such as dropping the film in the grass or spilling a diet coke on the film (yup that really happened), you have to stay calm in the moment. No matter what, do not involve the client until necessary. Handling the mistake personally and with preparation, is always the smartest way to deal with anything that goes wrong.
What are some tips on growing a social media following?
Kayla has grown her Instagram over the years, and now she really focuses on mixing more than just weddings onto her page. Her hope is to show more of herself as a person and an artist. With the market of film photographers being so saturated these days, showing more of herself helps differentiate her from the other creatives in her industry and attract a certain type of client. Kayla highly recommends Planoly to help plan what will be in her Instagram grid and is always aware of how it will look on the page. Kayla curates her images and because of her color profile with her film lab all the images are extremely cohesive! This cohesiveness really shows on her website and social media.
Why workshops can be a great way to grow!
Kayla has always loved doing one-on-one teaching workshops with other photographers and had never really thought of teaching workshops before. However, Kayla’s husband Clint actually encouraged her to teach the first workshop during a trip in France. The thought really scared Kayla, which then made her realize it was probably something she should works toward! Kayla has since hosted several workshops, further growing her knowledge of photography and strengthening her position as an educator. Do what scares you the most and THAT will yield the biggest reward!
