What three adjectives best describe your wedding?
traditional, fresh, personal
Tell us about your wedding venue(s) and why you chose to get married there.
My family attends Fatima church (dad’s a deacon there), so the ceremony site was a no-brainer. We have a great relationship with Fr. Russo, the pastor, and knew that we wanted him and the other clergy members to be part of our special day.
What was your favorite wedding purchase?
Finding my dress was memorable because it was totally unplanned, and the shoes were just…well, so fun! Also, I think deciding to wear my mom’s veil was a highlight. It was so special to her and my dad.
My maternal grandma was really touched by it; also even though she’s not with us anymore, my paternal grandma used to always tell me stories about how my mom was the prettiest bride she’d ever seen. I think I felt a little connected to her knowing that she’d somehow seen/selected a part of my bridal attire.
What was your best wedding day memory?
When the doors opened! I was kind of a mess, as I’m sure pictures will tell. I was a ball of emotions–the happy ones that look to the future and the sentimental ones that flashback to what you’ve gone through to get here. My family is really close, so sharing that walk with my dad was really special. I also loved dancing with my dad and then watching Andy dance with his mom. They’ve helped us through so much. Our parents are everything!
Did you create any details yourself? How did you incorporate your personalities into the wedding?
We did what we wanted. Andy doesn’t like cake, so there wasn’t a groom’s cake. I don’t like classic wedding cake so it was strawberry. We didn’t try to match or coordinate every detail because that’s not who we are. If we liked gold we used gold; if we liked silver, we used silver. In the end, I think it all came together. We used the music that we love and tried to tie as much Catholic tradition into our ceremony as possible even though it may not be standard for a wedding; it was the most important aspect to us.
The biggest thing we learned is that we had to hold fast and firm in our decisions. We knew what we wanted our day to look like, and even though there were doubts along the way, with the help of our family and friends, we stood by our vision. In the end, I think we stayed true to who we are and what we want to represented as a newly married couple.
