Chanti’s journey from blogging into copywriting

Chanti started a food blog when her son was young, but she quickly realized that growing and monetizing a food blog is really difficult and not for the faint of heart. She used her food blog as a portfolio to get clients in the health and wellness space, and from there she discovered copywriting which proved to be more valued than blogging. A huge pivot for her business came after she hired a mentor to teach her the ins and outs of copywriting.

Chanti mainly works with online entrepreneurs selling courses, coaching, or products often in health and wellness, personal development, or online marketing. 80% of her business is structured around creating quiz funnels for her clients. A quiz funnel is a tool for her clients to use as a lead magnet, which is a marketing asset used to grow your email list. It’s anything you give someone in exchange for their emails, such as a free guide or video series. Once they opt in, she creates an email funnel to send to the new leads. You can only get so much from an opt in or quiz results, so the email funnel builds on this initial relationship by establishing like and trust and getting the relationship started on the right foot.

Why quizzes?

Quizzes are the most effective lead magnet that Chanti has come across. They open the door for more valuable conversations than a free guide or webinar. You also have the opportunity to use the data you’re collecting with your quiz to learn more about who your audience is, and then you can create content based on that. The most successful quizzes do three things: tell you something positive that you didn’t know about yourself, affirm who you are and how you identify, and give tons of relevant value. This relevant value comes in the form of offering resources specific to your quiz outcome.

Mistakes made along the way

When Chanti started copywriting she was afraid to dig deep with her clients and ask them uncomfortable but important questions. She has since learned that these questions are a necessary piece of the puzzle and a fear that she needed to overcome. Asking questions is one of the most powerful ways to get results. Be bold enough to speak up and get to know your clients through the tough questions. The more you know about your client or audience the better you can serve them.

When Chanti was first starting out, she was a new mom with a baby in a toxic, abusive relationship. The emotional turmoil was blocking any potential success. There was no way for her to break through and create a thriving online business while staying in that relationship. Your relationships impact your business, so stand up for yourself, your life, and your happiness.

Chanti put her all into a full time job only for them to lay her off without warning. She was left with no means to support her family. Even a small side hustle as backup would have put her in a better position than the one the was in. Diversify what you do even if you work for yourself. You don’t want one thing to be your everything. You need varied skillsets as a backup when the unexpected happens.

Recently Chanti has been struggling with overestimating how much she can realistically do. Reexamine your priorities and decide at what’s truly important. The rest can wait. What are you truly working for? If you enjoy it that’s one thing, but if you’re feeling overwhelmed then adjust!

 Mistakes others are making in the industry

 Chanti has noticed there’s a big fear of being too specific. When you try to please everyone you end up pleasing no one, especially yourself. Specificity sells, so be who you are and focus on what you love and the people you want to serve. Spend time figuring yourself out. Honor that and be true to that and don’t feel like you have to work with and please everyone.

There will always be another blog post or webinar trying to steal your attention but the most important thing you can do as a business owner is to shut out the distractions, put your head down and do the work. Instead of reading another article about how to do this, just do it! It’s easy to want to keep learning but you won’t get anywhere if you don’t put the work in.

Which comes first: developing the course/product or the email list?

Build out your email list only if you have time to nurture those relationships while concurrently building out your course or product. If you can’t focus on both at the same time, focus on first creating a beta version of the course you want to develop, and then find the people to fill it. Don’t stress out too much about having the email list to fill it. If you’ve got the course ready to go it’s easier to build the email list than it is to build out a course.
