Growing up, I took lots of pictures. I would buy a disposable camera and shoot until I ran out of film. Running out of film….that’s something that I’ve forgotten about recently. In these days of digital photography, it’s been easy to forget about things…like running out of exposures or not being able to undo a photo or retake another. Until I was reminded by a friend of mine, Laura Reaux, how beautiful film photography can be!
The conversation came up between my Uncle Jimmy and I first about film vs. digital and I mentioned by interest in experimenting with film. Two weeks later, I received a package. Inside the box, I was gifted with a Nikon film camera, three lenses, and a new roll of film. And an extra surprise….the film inside the camera was used; I couldn’t wait to develop it.
I spent the morning after sipping coffee at Starbucks in B & N with Laura, discussing film, and shooting around the store with her that morning. Although I plan to use more professional means of developing film in the future, I took it to the Walgreen’s 1-hour developing….too anxious to wait for anything else! As the minutes passed, I remembered that same sense of excitement and anticipation that I used to feel as a little girl waiting for my prints….something I take for granted now.
These are the images that came out. The first three are my Uncle’s and I LOOVEEE them. The last, is a compilation of all the photos Laura and I took, in one exposure. lol..
I love the one above for it’s abstraction and the strong vivid colors. The one below, I love for the atmosphere and sense of emotion.
This is my Uncle Jimmy. I will treasure this one; He and I love to chat about building furniture and photography.
I owe this new adventure of shooting film to him.
And this last photo is the compilation of photos Laura and I took this past Saturday.
Laura says the thing she loves most about shooting film is that it teaches her to embrace imperfection. If I will attempt to take anything away from this experience, it’s that. I plan to continue shooting personally with film in order to inspire my digital work and to teach myself…and to remind myself that sometimes abstractions and imperfections are nice.
It seems the theme is “Magic Is Everywhere” and how true is that? I love it! I spy… the imperfectionist, delicious books, Sleeping Beauty, bricks, hawt nerdy glasses, nature’s shade, and a new-found love for film. 😉
