It’s over 100 degrees out, the sun is harsh, and there’s nothing but a dry, hot breeze sweeping through. This is one feeling I won’t forget about Phoenix, AZ. But another thing that I won’t forget is the beautiful landscapes, the architecture, and the feeling of awe I felt in so many parts of the city.
As I stood looking out from under the Cesar Chavez Library’s overhang, I couldn’t help but notice this view above. The shadow lines provided such a beautiful frame for the landscape.
Although I went through a total of three bottles of water and was completely soaked by the time I was finished shooting; the library was SO worth the trip. I loved the way it was so integrated into the ground and really created a strong relationship between the grass and the sky.
So WOW…yeah?! I know, right?! This was the interior of the Phoenix Public Library seen below. PUBLIC library!!! I couldn’t believe this. I think my jaw literally dropped to the floor when I walked in. The spaces were incredible and everything about the design was so well done.
Isn’t this one of the neatest exterior facades you’ve ever seen???!!! When we pulled up, we immediately fell in love with this building. It’s SO beautiful and really inviting. If you ever make it out to Phoenix, this is a must see.
Every detail…..every material….every angle was SO incredibly interesting.
The above details were taken at the South Mountain Community College Performing Arts Center. The bands of reddish-orange are rusted corten steel. And they created such a beautiful contrast against the blue sky!
If you didn’t know already, I’m kind of a junky for materials and strong contrasts in materiality. This building is pretty much the epitome of that! I couldn’t stop photographing it…..seriously, this is only about 1% of what I shot. 🙂
Although we never made our way into MOCA, I had plenty of fun shooting the details around the entrance like the colorful glass, and WAY too much fun testing the sharpness of different cactus plants. The one to the right is SUPER sharp, by the way!
And as we left from Phoenix, AZ to head to Redondo Beach, CA, I was again in awe, but this time of the vast landscape that surrounded us…..
…..and as we continued driving….SO much driving….the sun set over the horizon.
