When I was growing up, my mom always warned me never to judge a book by its cover, and yet…I did. Literally. As my aunt loosened her grasp around what appeared to be potential for the most boring book ever, I read the title The Millionaire Next Door. The exchange of this book began when I mentioned to her that I was in the process of buying a new car. She cautioned me against falling into the “I’ve got to have it all so that I can look good” trap and suggested I read the book.
With a little bit of hesitation and thoughts like, “My dad probably put her to this,” I sat on her couch and opened the book (mainly because I wanted her to know how thankful I was for her sharing with me at all.) By the 5th page, I was hooked. It’s not to say that this is a suspense novel, with a dramatic love story seeping from every page….but it’s interesting. As you may know, I am a business book finatic and this book was just what I needed.
It REALLY put things in perspective for me.
Although, like most, I had the pre-conceived notion that millionaires are either born rich or fell into it by pure luck, the book provided stunning statistics referencing the truth around what the majority of millionaires lives are like. Surprisingly, not what I thought.
Without revealing too much about the book, I’ll just say this: Most millionaires work hard, invest intelligently, and live simply. I couldn’t believe my eyes as I scanned page….after page….after page. The book got me. It did. And I should never have judged it by it’s cover.
Don’t judge like I did…..check it out for yourself. You might just be in for the same suprise I was.
Live Simply, Love Freely,
Catherine
