I’m preparing myself for some eye rolls because I have no doubt that there will be people who read this and laugh. YES…you do know more words than me. NO….I’m not kidding that I just learned these.

Apparantely, I was sheltered. Or maybe, I didn’t read enough…or MAYBE I zone out too much with my short attention span. It’s ALSO quite possible that my memory is so terrible that at one point, I learned the definition for these words and now have completely forgotten.

AWOL –  As I lifted a box full of shipments onto the counter at the post office this morning, Mr. Bud nodded and said, “I see you’ve been BUSY! I thought you went AWOL for a minute there.”

Unlike a lot of people who would just nod and go along with the conversation, I asked him to explain. 🙂 Typically used in military language, now (hopefully) I will be able to use this word on my own..lol

Fijord – As Mr. Bud packaged my shipments, we started speaking about travel abroad. Eventually, I’ll travel out of the U.S. for the first time ever…and he wanted to know if I’d swim in a Fiord. AGAIN. Twice in the same conversation, I drew a blank. lol…story of my life.

Anyway, come to find out it’s a body of water surrounded by steep sides or cliffs created by glaciers. And NO, I won’t be swimming in one…because from what I’ve learned, they’re cold. 😉

Awkward Turtles – We were sitting around the table at our Monday night girls night, and there it was, a SUPER awkward moment. Rather than the typical silence, Victoria puts one palm on the top of the back of her other hand and rotates her thumbs. I was like, “WHAT are you doing?!!!!” …. She proceeded to explain that she was doing the “awkward turtle” haha

That was definitely a first for me…and I’m now excited for the next awkward moment so that I too can bust out the awkward turtle.

Inuit – A friend of mine updated her status last week and I found myself thinking, what does this mean? She was describing her clothing with exaggeration as “inuit” as she walked across the campus at LSU. <–thank you google. I now know, that yes in fact she was being sarcastic and no…we don’t dress like inuits here.

Debutante – In New Orleans this weekend, I sat next to a man at ACME Oysters. It was probably one of the most ….Hmmm…Interesting conversations I’ve had in awhile. Not only did I eat my 2nd ever raw oyster during this conversation, I also was forced to look up the word debutante because he couldn’t believe I didn’t know it! haha

Fashionista – Thank you Urban Dictionary! 🙂 I think THIS term could be slightly fitting for me….or maybe more so, my mother. It’s defined as somone having a knack for combining trends and a love for shopping.

Graveyard Shift – This word actually came up twice in conversation lately…once with a bartendar and the other time with a friend who worked in a hotel. I’m not sure what learning all of these words will help me with in the future…but it’s fun to be able to participate in the conversation now. lol

SO, if you made it through this post, you either A) learned new words as well ….OR….B) Think I’m way behind in my vocabulary. 😉

It’s all good. Amelia always makes me feel better by saying that while everyone was out learning this words, I was learning things like aperture, shutter speed, and focal range. And I’m totally ok with that. Speaking of photography and words, I photographed my journal as a reminder that I really need to start writing again. So, starting yesterday I created my first, newest journal entry.

………..Maybe it’ll be the perfect place to write all these new words.

  1. This post definitely made me chuckle 🙂 I can SO relate! I knew a few of these but I have to say, never seen the awquard turtle. My word was torrential. As in a torrential downpour. Had never heard this word until recently and now I hear it all the time. Thanks for a good laugh Catherine!
