What adjectives best describe your wedding?
Fun, Personal, Endearing

Tell us about your wedding venue(s) and why you chose to get married there.
Rip Van Winkle Gardens on Jefferson Island is very special to use because that is where we got engaged. We have a photo of the engagement which we displayed at the wedding so our guest would make the connection. Since most of our guest were from out-of-state and this would be their first visit to Louisiana, I wanted a venue that displayed our culture and made for a very beautiful setting that was worth their travel.

What was your favorite wedding purchase?
The groom/s tie! Yellow is one of my favorite colors so I surprised him by getting him a yellow tie. Also my wedding dress. I felt so comfortable and pretty when I had my dress on, and as someone who is very shy when it comes to dressing up, it felt great to have so much confidence on my big day.

What was your best wedding day memory?
Dancing the entire night away! I am pretty shy and not a huge dancer, but Jon and I really took hold of the evening and had as much fun as possible. We were so focused on just having fun together and soaking in every moment, that I never even noticed that people were watching us dance.

Did you create any details yourself?
How did you incorporate your personalities into the wedding?
Yes! Our wedding party was made up of only our sisters, so we let them pick our their own dresses and style (though they all decided to get a lace dress from J. Crew). We wanted it to be their own and something they would be comfortable in. Our guest book also played our on profession as Stage Managers. Our guest “signed in” which is what we have actor’s do each day when they arrive for rehearsal. Another personal touch was that my (Kelly) cousin made the cakes. We did not want one large cake, but several different flavor cakes and desserts to show off what a wonderful baker she it.

A few nights ago, I sat at my computer to answer some emails. And as part of the “getting to know my clients” process, I opened an inquiry questionnaire from a future potential bride!

On the questionnaire, I asked: “Would you care to share the details of your proposal story?” I feel like asking this question really gives me quick insight into the couple and their personalities! Getting to know my clients is something that I feel is so important in wedding photography as I’m spending more time with the couple than anyone else on their wedding day.

As I read the details of this proposal story, I was simultaneously talking with my husband.

Was our proposal story good enough?

When Brad proposed to me, we were at my house unpacking boxes from my move. We were discussing our future and how we’d like to spend it. Then, he disappeared. I heard my name from the other room, and when I walked in…he was on one knee holding up a simple gold band that he had just pulled from my jewelry box (a thumb ring to be exact). lol He said he didn’t want to wait another day…that he was holding a “round symbolic object” and knew that he wanted to be with me forever.

What may come off as a flighty, spontaneous attempt to ask me to marry him was in our eyes the most genuine, authentic and immediate claim that this was the start of our life together. It doesn’t involve the details of extravagance or extreme romance; but it’s real. And it’s ours.

Is our proposal real if I didn’t have a ring?

I had several people comment on the fact that I wasn’t wearing a ring, so I started wearing a small band. But even then, I had someone say the band didn’t look like an engagement ring which made me feel uncomfortable all over again.

Over the next several weeks, we did design a ring together. But in the immediate weeks following (when I didn’t have a ring) I felt a lingering sense of insecurity.

Why is our society so based around these rules?!

And when will our own stories, our own journeys be good enough?

The pressures of a wedding are almost overwhelming. Personally, I had more than one breakdown during our engagement where I questioned the purpose of this day. Is it about what others are going to say about our wedding or about how we’ll feel celebrating with those we love the most?

If you are someone who has struggled with these same concerns or insecurities, you’re not the only one. And being in the wedding industry it makes me even more sad to know that other brides are out there feeling this way, too. Because at the end of the day it’s the celebration of a marriage not a wedding. Do I love the details as much as the next person? Absolutely! But I just worry that sometimes the important things can get lost in the shuffle.

So, I’d like to take this moment to not only remind myself but to encourage others as well: own YOUR story. For all that it is and all that it isn’t, be confident in that. Because that.IS. beautiful. <3

Was this the dress you initially thought you’d wear for your wedding?
Not at all! It is much more fitted than I imagined wearing. I actually had a hard time picturing myself in a wedding dress since a wedding dress is so different from any other dress you will put on. I had nothing to compare it too. I tried on several different styles before I determined this dress was just me.

Tell Me About Your Dress! Why did you choose this look?
I wanted to have a dress that reflected me, so that years from now when I look back on pictures, I am not playing dress up, but am wearing something that reflects my best self and my personalty. The dress was much more fitted than I imagined ever wearing, but I felt confident and pretty when I had it on. It is very simple, which is perfect for me, yet the lace makes it so unique. I knew it was a dress that would wow my fiance.

How do you feel when you put on your dress?
Like a bride. My dress is very comfortable and fun to wear. I think my fiance is going to be blown away when he see’s me which is all I care about.

Why did you choose this particular bridal session location?
I did my bridals at my parents house, where I grew up. I loved the idea that I had such a connection to my location. It made the experience fun and casual. The photo’s are not just about me in my wedding dress, but really reflect where I am from.

Any advice for future brides embarking on this wedding journey?
What I realized is that the wedding is not just about the bride and groom. You have your entire marriage to look forward too and all the events and experiences you will enjoy together. A wedding is about celebrating your love with your friends and family.

Tell us about your wedding venue(s) and why you chose to get married there.

If you’re not following my instagram account: www.instagram.com/catherineguidry, then you may not know that we just moved into our first home this year. After getting married in December (highlight of our special day here), we decided to settle in Lafayette where we originally attended college!

The time here has been so much fun already and I can’t wait to make many more memories in our humble little cottage home. <3

DSC_2938-Edit

Our first priority was creating seating for our guests! I absolutely LOVE these barstools that I found from West Elm! They’re now discontinued but thanks to the sales rep in Florida they helped me track down the last four in the country and get them here. 🙂

DSC_2977

We’re slowly beginning to find these little pieces that are giving our house a bit of visual organization. Two of those are these Anthropologie Hemisphere Tiebacks  and this Neck Tie Marshal. Organization is my jam!

GFR_2311

This is our living room (that you can see our small chihuahua Chaos is already loving). 🙂 It’s my absolute favorite space in the house and I love all the natural light which pours in through the tall windows. The ceilings are a bit higher than our last space so my mom was sweet enough to sew on some fabric from Joann’s to the bottom of our ivory drapes! They look custom and beautiful and were the perfect finish to our living space.

Thank you for allowing me to share our spaces! And we can’t wait for more wonderful memories to come!

Tell us about your wedding venue(s) and why you chose to get married there.
We got married at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church which is where my parents were married, so it was special. Our reception was at Le Pavillon. We loved this venue because it is one large open room. It is a beautiful venue!

What was your favorite wedding purchase?
My dress, of course!

What was your best wedding day memory?
Watching Ben’s face as a I walked down the aisle. I had a blast dancing at the reception with Ben, our friends, and our family.

I was open to different styles when I first started trying on dresses. I tried on anything and everything! Sonya at Lemon Drop was amazing and helped me to realize what I liked and didn’t like, and she helped me to find the perfect dress!

Tell Me About Your Dress! Why did you choose this look?
The lace is beautiful on this dress, and the delicate beading adds to the detail. It has a lovely train but is still not too heavy. Being able to dance in my dress was a must! This was my favorite dress out of the several I tried on. I knew it was the one when I put it on, especially after my mom and sisters saw it and loved it.

How do you feel when you put on your dress?
Excited! I’m so ready for my wedding day! I never want to take it off when I try it on.

Why did you choose this particular bridal session location?
It provided the comfort of a private residence. There are so many beautiful photo opportunities on his property. His landscaping is gorgeous. And the large oak trees are stunning and also a special “symbol” of our engagement.

What three adjectives best describe your wedding?
Colorful, Delicious, and a BLAST

Tell us about your wedding venue(s) and why you chose to get married there.
We got married at our church. We met the associate pastor, Tim, in a new member class a while back and instantly felt a connection. He’s a great guy and we knew we wanted him to perform our ceremony. We decided to use the church instead of another venue because it’s a nice building that sits on a pretty piece of property right outside of the hustle and bustle of Baton Rouge. Also, I love the arch above the doors that you see when walking up to the front doors!

What was your favorite wedding purchase?
My dress was my favorite purchase, for sure! My dress was a custom design by my good friend, Natasha Miller, who I met in design school at LSU. The brooch that was sewn at my waist I actually purchased on a trip to New York City with Natasha about 5 years ago, not realizing that one day it would be on the wedding gown she created for me! The process of creating the dress starting from sketches, all the way to the final fitting, was so much fun!

What was your best wedding day memory?
I had the best time dancing to Phat Hat with Deane and all of our friends and family at the reception. Also, my cousin Harrison sang at our ceremony which was very special to me. I heard him sing at another cousin’s wedding many years ago and from that moment on I hoped that one day he would sing at my own.

My wedding photography was also very important to me! Not only am I obsessed with documenting memories with great pictures, but my parents lost their wedding pictures when the film was exposed to light when processing. We have one picture of them cutting their cake and that’s the only memory we have photographed from their wedding. I grew up hearing this story and always knew that I would not sacrifice when it came to wedding photography! Catherine is so amazing both in her photography talent and her sweet personality! I knew when she photographed my best friend’s wedding two years ago that I wanted her to photograph my own wedding. I actually planned my wedding date around Catherine’s schedule and it was so worth it!! :)Did you create any details yourself? How did you incorporate your personalities into the wedding?

How did you incorporate your personalities into the wedding?
I designed our programs and koozies, if that counts. And I put together the sign-in table tribute to our parents’, grandparents’, and great-grandparents’ wedding days. We used music from some of our favorite movies for the ceremony (Disney movies, Jurassic Park, Steel Magnolias, Forrest Gump). And Jordan’s groom’s cake was modeled after their fantasy football trophy, which is a literal tree stump.

Tell Me About Your Dress! Why did you choose this look?
It was exactly what I was looking for! My dream dress 🙂
I wanted a WOW dress, one that no one else around here has had. I love all of the little details, but the train is my favorite!
When planning my wedding the two things that I wanted to focus on and spend the most on was my dress and my photographer! I do not regret my decision one bit.

How do you feel when you put on your dress?
I feel gorgeous! Exactly the way I wanted to feel! I still feel like me though!

What three adjectives best describe your wedding?
Southern, Elegant, Fun

Tell us about your wedding venue(s) and why you chose to get married there.
Being born and raised in Baton Rouge, I love this city and all things relating to South Louisiana. I’ve always been fascinated with Louisiana History, especially the Huey P. Long era. Growing up, I was enamored with the Old State Captiol. It was like something out of a fairytale! Not only was HPL the last governor to fulfil his term at the Old State Capitol, but it now serves as Louisiana’s Political History Museum, so it seemed perfect to get married in this historic and gorgeous place.
We had this enchanting and extravagant ceremony location, so we thought it would be cool (and convenient) to have the reception at the very modern Shaw Center right across the street. The Shaw Center for the Arts is a museum for the performing and fine arts. I loved that both of our venues would be museums, one old and one new, both beautiful and unique.

What was your favorite wedding purchase?
Can I list every single one of my vendors in a 30-way tie? Seriously, these people are rock stars. We could not have asked for a more helpful and awesome group of people to make the big day perfect!
If you’re looking for a material answer, I’d have to say it was my dress and veil. I told Blush I basically wanted to look like a pretty pretty princess, and I really felt like one at our wedding. I feel like I should have a more sentimental and heartwarming answer than that, but did you see how fabulous the dress and veil were?? 😉

What was your best wedding day memory?
1. Pre-ceremony, I was so excited, but felt so calm at the same time. It was the strangest feeling, reaffirmed everything I already knew. I knew this was the man I loved and wanted to spend my life with, and I never felt nervous about that.

2. After the ceremony, we were taking photos with the entire bridal party, and the guys started singing and it made me start laughing. I couldn’t get it together after that. I didn’t cry before, during, or after the ceremony, but there were now tears in my eyes from laughing so hard. It’s not sweet or sentimental, but uncontrollable laughter is one of my favorite things.

3. When the pastor announced us as husband and wife! There’s not much to go into there; I was just so happy at that moment, because it was all finally happening!

Did you create any details yourself? How did you incorporate your personalities into the wedding?
I designed our programs and koozies, if that counts. And I put together the sign-in table tribute to our parents’, grandparents’, and great-grandparents’ wedding days. What three adjectives best describe your wedding?
Romantic, Vintage, Intimate

Tell us about your wedding venue(s) and why you chose to get married there.
Joey lived in Rayne and I lived in Maurice. Our Lady of Fatima was “middle ground” where we would meet for Sunday mass. I have always loved the stain glass windows there. During mass, I would picture Joey and I getting married with all the colors painting the church.

What was your favorite wedding purchase?
My wedding dress. I felt like a timeless bride each and every time I put it on. It was vintage and romantic. The best part about it was I could MOVE IN IT!

What was your best wedding day memory?
Walking into the reception with our Wedding Party in tow to “Get Up Offa That Thing” by James Brown. It set the tone for our guest. They knew we were ready to dance!

Did you create any details yourself? How did you incorporate your personalities into the wedding?
Joey and I decided to read our own readings at our ceremony after attending a friend’s wedding where the bride and groom did the same. We weren’t engaged yet, however we both agreed how that was so personal and we were doing it! I read Sirach 26: 1-4 13-16 which is about what is a good wife. Joey read 1 Corinthians 13 which was about what love is. Many guest had never seen a couple do this before and it was definitely a highlight of our wedding!

Wow grand is a museum? The walls themselves are just gorgeous!
And that garden… well when you look at pictures you can easily see why!!!

What was your favorite wedding purchase?
Todd and I both agree that it would have to be the live painting at the reception with Alex Harvie! It is so unique and made everyone feel so special! Alex has the perfect personality to interact with the guests. Everyone had so much fun with him!

What was your best wedding day memory?
Holding Luke’s hand before around the corner of the museum; it made me cry knowing we were about to see each other for the first time down the aisle.

Did you create any details yourself? How did you incorporate your personalities into the wedding?
The first dance song, the Popeyes cake, the feathers in everything, the amazing tennis shoes we both changed into towards the end of the night…these things were ALL ways that we incorporated our personalities into the day.

I am a parishioner of St. John, love Father Chester and love the gorgeous Cathedral! Le Pavillon is absolutely gorgeous and the Petroleum Club takes care of every detail. Being the youngest of three girls, I wanted everyone to be able to enjoy themselves and not worry about each little thing.

It’s a toss up between the moment of being announced and walking into the reception or our first dance as husband and wife! It was so heartwarming walking into the reception and getting “that warm fuzzy feeling” of seeing our wonderful family and friends here to celebrate us! In addition to my brother in law performing our first dance song, it was so great to dance with my husband (still hasn’t hit me that I have one of those yet)!

Did you create any details yourself? How did you incorporate your personalities into the wedding?
I believe we incorporated our personalities by all of the unique details we included: Having so many little touches of my sweet aunt, remembering our deceased loved ones with the pictures on my boutique. All of the monograms, UL groom’s cake were so special to us as well!

Tell us about your wedding venue(s) and why you chose to get married there.
Our wedding ceremony took place at the Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist. I have received all of my sacraments through the Cathedral, so it was only natural to return to a place that means so much to me.

What was your favorite wedding purchase?
My favorite wedding purchase was actually a surprise to me, from my mother. We has a painter set up at our reception who skillfully managed to capture the love and happiness of our special celebration in a beautiful painting.

What was your best wedding day memory?
For Taylor, it was when I walked down the aisle at the church.
For me, it was at the end of our reception, running through the tunnel of our friends and family, bells and ribbon streamers in their hands, cheering for us as we made our exit. The amount of love and pure bliss that we felt was truly amazing.

Did you create any details yourself? How did you incorporate your personalities into the wedding?
My bridal bouquet was made by my mother, who is the most skilled florist that I know. It was wrapped with antique lace, and included a rosary, a brooch that was once my Grandmother’s, and a sixpence for luck.
Taylor and I enjoyed the process of choosing the readings for our ceremony. We took our time and chose readings that had special meaning for us.

Tell us about your wedding venue(s) and why you chose to get married there.
We chose St. Patrick’s Church because it is such a beautiful Church with lots of New Orleans history and is in a great location. We loved the old warehouse feel of Tomas Bistro. The food and staff were both wonderful.

What was your favorite wedding purchase?
Definitely the wedding dress 🙂

What was your best wedding day memory?
Walking through the streets of New Orleans during our second line as husband and wife with all of our family and friends in tow!

Did you create any details yourself? How did you incorporate your personalities into the wedding?
From the color scheme to the New Orleans feel of the night, we planned it all. My dad and cousin helped fabricate the cake stand from an old cypress tree, my sister-in-law made the completely original cake topper, a family friend made Kevin’s beer-themed groom’s cake, and Kevin made the “mash paddles” for his groomsmen. The mash paddles are used for home brewing, which is one of Kevin’s favorite hobbies. As far as the feel of the wedding goes, we wanted it to be fun and festive with a New Orleans twist!

Tell Me About Your Dress! Why did you choose this look?
I always said I wanted an open back. It took a few tries, but the stylist took it off the mannequin and said, “This is THE dress, try it on and this will be YOUR dress!” She was so right! With the low back and lace, the dress feels feminine and timeless. Another big plus is that I can dance the night away in it!

How do you feel when you put on your dress?
When I first realized this was THE DRESS…I began to freak out and felt really hot!!! Everyone was asking concerned and asking if I was alright and there I was asking, “Can we take it home today?!”
Then, when I put it on for my bridals, I felt like almost like royalty. With the hair and makeup, the look was amazing, but once we put on the veil, it was breathtaking.

Any advice for future brides embarking on this wedding journey?

I have never felt more beautiful or more like a model 😉

Being a teacher, the job never ends. With that being said, I have come to realize, with a wedding I had to be selfish at times and put myself first. You have to understand that this is the ONLY time you will be planning your wedding. You deserve to take time out for yourself and enjoy it because it only happens once! Also let your mom be a part of it. She’s dreamed of it since you were born!!!

Tell us about your wedding venue(s) and why you chose to get married there.
Josh and I met while in Dental School in New Orleans 9 years ago so when we were planning our wedding, we knew we wanted to go back to New Orleans to get married. We looked at multiple catholic churches in New Orleans before deciding on the St. Louis Cathedral because it is a beautiful church. We chose our reception venue because of the location and the modern look to the Jaxson.

What was your favorite wedding purchase?
My Dress!

What was your best wedding day memory?
Everything!! Probably my most favorite memory is reading and opening my gift from Josh then having our first look. That was the first time he had seen me in my dress and it was just a special moment for us both.

Tell Me About Your Dress! Why did you choose this look?
Nope! I actually wanted long sleeve and beaded, but this dress totally changed my mind!

How do you feel when you put on your dress?
I just loved how different it was… and how I immediately felt like the dress was made for my body type. Feeling beautiful in your own skin is so important!

Why did you choose this particular bridal session location?
I think it is absolutely gorgeous and serene… and has a similar feeling to the sculpture garden (which is where our wedding will take place)!

What three adjectives best describe your wedding?
traditional, fresh, personal

Tell us about your wedding venue(s) and why you chose to get married there.
My family attends Fatima church (dad’s a deacon there), so the ceremony site was a no-brainer. We have a great relationship with Fr. Russo, the pastor, and knew that we wanted him and the other clergy members to be part of our special day.

What was your favorite wedding purchase?
Finding my dress was memorable because it was totally unplanned, and the shoes were just…well, so fun! Also, I think deciding to wear my mom’s veil was a highlight. It was so special to her and my dad.
My maternal grandma was really touched by it; also even though she’s not with us anymore, my paternal grandma used to always tell me stories about how my mom was the prettiest bride she’d ever seen. I think I felt a little connected to her knowing that she’d somehow seen/selected a part of my bridal attire.

What was your best wedding day memory?
When the doors opened! I was kind of a mess, as I’m sure pictures will tell. I was a ball of emotions–the happy ones that look to the future and the sentimental ones that flashback to what you’ve gone through to get here. My family is really close, so sharing that walk with my dad was really special. I also loved dancing with my dad and then watching Andy dance with his mom. They’ve helped us through so much. Our parents are everything!

Did you create any details yourself? How did you incorporate your personalities into the wedding?
We did what we wanted. Andy doesn’t like cake, so there wasn’t a groom’s cake. I don’t like classic wedding cake so it was strawberry. We didn’t try to match or coordinate every detail because that’s not who we are. If we liked gold we used gold; if we liked silver, we used silver. In the end, I think it all came together. We used the music that we love and tried to tie as much Catholic tradition into our ceremony as possible even though it may not be standard for a wedding; it was the most important aspect to us.
The biggest thing we learned is that we had to hold fast and firm in our decisions. We knew what we wanted our day to look like, and even though there were doubts along the way, with the help of our family and friends, we stood by our vision. In the end, I think we stayed true to who we are and what we want to represented as a newly married couple.
