I have set a goal for the year 2018 to spend just 20 minutes a day reading. It’s funny how just 20 minutes a day after several weeks turns into an entire book!!! My goal is to read a mix of books on leadership, finances, creativity and personal growth!
I have an amazon cart of saved books that I am ready to read one-by-one in the upcoming months but because I heard so much about this book, I started with Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert!
I mean, the title has “Creative Living Beyond Fear” in it. I feel like this book was written for me! Elizabeth is the author of Eat. Pray. Love. (which I have also heard incredible things about) but the type of people that were posting about this one were all creatives that I admire in the photo, social media and design industries.
First, I LOVE Elizabeth’s writing style. A few pages in you feel like you are old friends. She talks to you so freely and so openly and just does such a great job of allowing you in. Secondly, the topic of creativity is such an interesting one and I really love the way that she describes creativity as a living thing! She discusses topics like:
- Should you pursue your passion as your career?
- What to do when you are feeling uninspired?
- If you do not pursue an idea…what happens to it?
- Can anyone be creative or create?
- What are some of the biggest obstacles to being a creative?
- How does fear and self-empowerment play into creating?
I don’t want to give all of these answers away because I feel like I would be giving away the book. But I will say this: Elizabeth has made me rethink some of the ways that I am doing things. She has also made me rethink some of the ways that I am approaching my own work and creative process.
This is such an easy read and sometimes I even found myself reading more than 20 minutes at night because the book kept me so interested and wanting to read more.
My favorite quote from the book is this : “I think perfectionism is just a high-end haute couture version of fear.”
If you too are interested in reading this book, you can find it HERE on Amazon –>
I will be sure to keep you posted on the other books I am reading this year!! Next up, Essentialism by Greg McKeown!
