I just finished the book “A Million Miles in a Thousand Years”…and I couldn’t put it down. Thanks to a recommendation from my friend Jamie Orillion, I have been inspired to really examine my life and to make sure that I am truly living.
The book is about an author, who’s having a movie made about his life. But in the process of making the movie, the director informs him that there are a “few changes” they should make so that the movie will be more interesting. Being that the movie is about his life….indirectly, he was being told that his life was….well, boring…or at least that’s how he received the comment. This thought left him thinking:
“What makes a good story?”
Throughout the entire book, I was inspired to really focus on my own story as he focused on his. The character, Don, is on a mission to create a strong story of his life. And as a result, he loves, he laughs, and he learns. He bikes across the country, he meets a woman, and he strengthens friendships along the way.
These are a few of my favorite quotes from the book:
- “And he wondered out loud if the point wasn’t the search, but the transformation the search creates.”
- “But there in Boston, it occurred to me that his story was better than mine for the simple fact that his story was actually happening.“
- “People love to have lived a great story, but few people like the work it takes to make it happen. But joy costs pain.”
And my FAVORITE quote:
“The most often repeated commandment in the Bible is “Do not fear.” It’s in there over two hundred times.“
If you’re looking for an interesting book to read, one that’s inspirational and will motivate you to live. This is it.
Don and I go way back. I almost married him when I was 19. He never knew, though, which is just as well because I changed my mind when I found out he could be my father. This book is definitely going on my reading list! I have Through Painted Deserts if you want it:)
My dear, sweet friend. I thought I was going to catch up on your blog and simply see your photography and read a few stories from MC. Little did I know, I now have a whole list of books that I have to go out and buy immediately. Thank yoU!
