It’s called “From Mama to Me” and it was written and created by my very own Mama Nita. “It” being her cookbook. It’s filled with the best cajun recipes and so many wonderful foods and desserts that I grew up loving to eat. In fact, it’s really the only cookbook I’ve ever used (which I suppose doesn’t do it the compliment it deserves since I don’t ever cook).

Anyway, the cookbook is titled “From Mama to Me” and the phrase had me thinking of all the things that I’ve learned from my Mama Nita. Or even the things that were passed from her to my dad….and now to me.

I had the best visit with her last night; we talked about all sorts of things like what she’s been cooking lately and how I don’t cook well enough. lol…and we laughed and we laughed. In fact, if there’s one thing that I love, it’s how much I laugh when I am with her. She’s such an inspiration to me. I’ve written before about Mama Nita….how when I grow up, I want to be just like her and how amazing it is to be at her house (with so many memories from my childhood).

And now, even when I visit her still…I’m blown away by her amazingness. Yes, amazingness. There really is no other words to describe it. She’s always interested in new technology and places and she has the memory of an elephant. She’s met friends of mine only once and still remembers their names. We were discussing the spot for one of the destination weddings I’m shooting this year and and she pulled out a GIANT book to look it up, so I looked at the book with her and when it was taking us forever to find the city….I told her, “Look Mama Nita, let me show you how it’s done.” 😉

I pulled out my phone and I started walking her through the process of how to use the phone’s google maps and seriously, within the hour she was texting my brother, my dad, and finding our exact location on Google Maps.

I love that for once, there was a little bit of a transition from Me to Mama…:) I actually showed her something! But let it be known that this ONE occasion does not outnumber the thousands of things that she’s passed to us. Her knowledge, her jokes, and let’s definitely NOT forget: her cooking! Last night I ate a bowl of her chicken and okra gumbo. It was SO good….maybe one day I’ll learn to cook like that.

Mama Nita + Me

I know Mama Nita will eventually read this post on her computer, so let me say this in advance: Mama Nita, I know you’re probably mad at me right now for posting this photo.

You’re going to say that you have wrinkles or that you don’t like the shot. First of all, I look terrible!

But most of all, it makes me think of how much fun I have when I’m with you. How no matter what,  you still love so big, and how you never forget.

Well, I promise…even with this terrible memory of mine…to never forget either. I will never forget how much I love you.

I absolutely LOVE this cookbook! My mother, Roberta Bergeron Thibodeaux gave my brother, sister and I this simply amazing cookbook as a gift. My husband and I have lived all over the Country and have given it as gifts to many of our friends and extended family. Everyone loves it! Born and raised in Church Point, my family also cooked magnificent Cajun recipes, most of which however were never documented, simply verbally repeated over the years. My husband and I now reside in a suburb of Memphis, and I was just talking to him about making one of “my” famous coffee cakes which of course is from your Family Cookbook. However, it is now packed in 1 of many boxes in the garage as we have recently made yet another family move. I thought I may find it online — no such luck. Can you help me; would love it for this wknd. Pecan Lemon Bread – Orange Walnut Bread –
I went to school with Nita and Rosemary Guidry, whom I assume are your aunts. They were a year ahead of me. Would sincerely appreciate your help. Continued Good Eating!
